E&CO LTD. developed a safety operation procedure for hydrogen ships

In connection with the hydrogen bunkering research project led by the Korean Register (KR), the safety operation procedures for hydrogen-fueled ships and hydrogen carriers were jointly developed over the course of two years (2023~2024) by the E&CO R&D Technology Institute and a company specialized in shipbuilding engineering.


The procedures were prepared separately for the hydrogen-fueled ships bunkering systems-including gaseous hydrogen, liquid hydrogen, and solid hydrogen and for the loading/unloading of hydrogen carriers systems-covering both liquid hydrogen and LOHC.

It includes explanations of the physical properties of hydrogen, case studies of past hydrogen-related accidents, and safety regulations, international standards, and an analysis of guidelines for hydrogen fuel risk management. It is expected to contribute to enhanced safety and accident prevention during the actual operation of hydrogen-fueled ships and hydrogen carriers.


한국선급(KR)에서 주관하는 수소 벙커링 연구과제와 관련하여 수소 선박 안전 운용 절차서를 E&CO R&D 기술연구소와 선박설계회사가 협력하여 2023~2024년 2년에 걸쳐 공동개발을 완료하였다.


절차서는 추진선 벙커링 시스템(기체수소/액체수소/고체수소) 및 운송선 이송 및 적하역 시스템(액체수소/액상수소)으로 각각 작성되었다.


수소의 물리적 특성에 따른 설명과 수소 사고사례 및 위험성 연료 안전관리를 위한 규정/국제기준/가이드라인 분석으로 이루어져 실제 선박 운용 시 안전성을 높여 안전사고를 예방하는데 도움이 될 것으로 기대된다.
